If my failing memory serves me correctly, I am sure I read on here some time ago, that it is possible to source compost from your local déchetterie. I’ve tried the search facility and failed miserably. It would be much appreciated if anyone has knowledge of this, including prices, etc. Thank you so much.

In our area Gacé / Vimoutiers it is free, just take your trailer.

You do not say where you are.

I usually get it from Vire. They are very friendly and cooperative.

Usually I pay about 10 Euro per trailer load (close to a cubic meter). Hope that helps.

Apologies Adrian, I am just outside Flers. Againstthegrain, thank you for the detailed information. Fortunately, Vire is not too far and so I will give them a visit. Do they load the trailer for you?

It’s probably too far away from you but the déchetterie Alençon Nord give it away free. It’s a bit hit and miss whether there is any available, sometimes there’s nothing and sometimes there’s 2 or 3 truck loads dumped there. They usually have 2 large spades available but you can bring your own. Up to you to fill a bucket, a compost bag or a trailer; no one will help.

No problem, Twinkle, they are happy to do that. Takes less than 5 minutes.

    Many thanks Brian.

Againstthegrain, sorry to trouble you again. I have googled “la déchèterie de Canvie” and am finding results for décheteries all around Vire. Is it possible you could let me have a road name or number? Thanks so much.

Sounds great, compost free or very cheap, but what do you want to plant in it? It is going to have a large amount of grass cuttings in it which will make it have a high acid level. I have used grass cuttings as a mulch and, yes, it keeps the weeds away but i did not understand why the hedges were getting in a bad state. Acid !!

Hello Mic, well, that’s interesting / valuable information, thank you. Especially useful, as I intend using the compost to fill a couple of raised veggy beds that I’m making. Just trying to take the strain off my back.

Twinkle, this information came from my daughter in law who with my son owns Horti Production du Moulin at Cherence le Roussel. They have had customers who have had plants, veg and flowers, fail and when asked what they were planted in the answer has very often been dechetterie compost  If you are ever near Cherence le Roussel ask Stephanie who has some english or James, english and french. I understand that some plants quite like acid.

Many thanks for the further information Mic. Don’t often go over that way, but if I do, will certainly pop into Horti Prodution du Moulin.
