Excellent idea, but maybe you should read (on page 3 of General “Single people/Couples wishing to meet new friends” before loads of us respond. Numerous difficulties in a large area – especially distances involving travel etc.,
However, posts specifically mentioning interests, hobbies etc., might work. A meeting up for drinks/dog walking/big picnic/rambling/sports event might work a lot better than a “dating site” – and remembering that people (couples and singles) looking for friends also have friends to involve, so a lot could grow from that.
I firmly believe that single people looking for relationships need to find single friends first – and in a group. Casually – no pressure, disappointment, just common interests and fun.

I kicked off the topic Chapeau rouge referred to, but after 77 posts only one dog-walking meeting took place that I know of.

I was at a loss as to what lvs2 means by “a bit of …” until I read their other topic “buddy for riding”, then it all became clear. Tea and nibbles. I suppose the tea is optional in those circumstances! :yahoo:

Being serious for a moment (I can’t maintain it much longer than that), I agree that sports, crafts or hobbies could be a starting point.

I had to give up playing sports a couple of years ago on health grounds. Detest millionnaire sports like premiership ball games on TV. In fact gave up watching TV years ago except for special occasions. I play around with a lathe making wooden bowls, but it is hard to use “Come up and see my bowls” as a chat-up line, especially if a lady has hearing difficulties. My face is still sore from the last time. :yahoo:

So hobbies. I have a large (wait for it …) collection of stamps from my youth, but philately gets you nowhere these days.

Ah, you might have noticed I have a piano accordion next to my name.

OK, that particular one needs to be restored, and in the meantime is mothballed, but I have a more modern one that I am learning on. I also have guitars that I would also love to be able to get real tunes out of. So if you would like to come and play with me, I’m sure I could rise to the occasion and we could make sweet music together. After that comment I think I am going to throw up.

Wish we lived nearer to you, would love to ramble (with the dogs) and get to have a really good laugh. You sound like very good company!
Accordion!? That was the funniest bit……put on my specs as well as enlarging the pic, eh voilà …..it’s actually not a pile of books then, but a musical instrument awaiting restoration.
Doubtless the poor brave soul will surface some time this evening from behind the unwashed pots – battered rollup in one hand and couch grass stuck to her knees – after another Scary Sunday Lunch Extravaganza and Lock In (which would probably see an end to those of us of a more delicate disposition). But thought her jolly place might be worth a thought for a possible ‘meeting new friends’ get together….after a Sunday walk or instead of. If enough people were interested, of course.
Maybe, just maybe, some common interests or hobbies will encourage people looking for company from time to time to make an effort and post some details.
