I don’t really think it’s the done thing to criticise another UI forum on this forum, John Doe. And had it perhaps occurred to you that there may have been a reason for someone calling you a “plank”?

And what Stinky writes isn’t poetry, they are stories, though they may not be written in your preferred style. Short, pithy sentence structure is a recognized style.

Welcome to the forum, Johnny Marr. Pity that your first post on the day you joined the forum is so negative and targeted. Did you join this forum for the sole purpose of making that post? I wonder if you have another identity elsewhere.

Negativity is the enemy that drives people away from forums. If you read through this topic and the rest of the content of this forum, you will see that people want a friendly forum. I said on 6 July “The forum used to announce events in local communities, and was used to exchange information on a multitude of topics, as well as containing a bit of general chit chat”. Your positive contributions in that spirit would be most welcome.

I didn’t criticise UiB. I commented on the conduct of ‘some people’ who post on it. And, unless I had posted something particularly insulting, which I hadn’t, any decent person who disagreed with me could have done so without descending into personal attacks.

The use use of foul language masked by asterisks to emphasise insults is more a reflection of the personality of the poster than the person targeted.

I also suggested a way that UiB could be made more user-friendly by grouping all the word games etc together rather than having them shown individually on the general page. Nothing wrong in that.

I have found one definition of poetry as “literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm”. I think Stinky does that. If you don’t mind, I will stick with that definition. Short, pithy sentences are a great way to add emphasis, especially after a long paragraph.

    Innit!

Don’t get so worked up about it, John, after all, one man’s ‘bleeding idiot’ is only another man’s ‘effing plank’, it’s a question of dialect, origins, and usage, that’s all.

With the number of regular users who don’t seem to be put off by the way the forum shows the word games etc, I’d say it’s pretty user-friendly as it stands.

Just listened to Clive James discussing and reading some of his poetry on the Today programme. Some short, pithy lines, and some longer ones. I think Stinky would have appreciated it.

I see that the topic has answered its own question.

I wouldn’t join any club which would accept me as a member.

I think that was just a shot in the dark, Jonnie – Abraham Lincoln.

    Funny, though.

Has anyone else noticed that 11 of the last 15 posts have been by someone claiming to be called John or a derivative of it. The rest of you must be getting fed up seeing the name all the time.

I’m expecting a post by Jack Hughes in due course. Jack is another derivative of John.
